We are still in the 2. RRFNs Harvest Hotline is sponsored, in part, by Ag. Country Farm Credit Services. A Slight Delay. Heavy rains last week shut down the sugarbeet harvest for a time in southwestern Minnesota. Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Co op Vice President of Agriculture Todd Geselius says the co op has enough beets on the ground to make it through early this week. Wed like to avoid rain right now. We need to get harvest going, but we dont have a lot of control over that, so well deal with what we have to do deal with. Rolling Forward With Beets. Sugarbeet harvest continues throughout the Red River Valley. East Grand Forks, Minnesota farmer Chris Adams battled some wet weather in the first couple days of the harvest, but is otherwise, going well. Tonnages have stayed in the low to mid 3. We were pushing 2. Adams says the only concern he has right now is the at risk acres. They just cut it back from 1. Muddy Fields, Decent Crops. Matejcek Custom Harvesting owner Mike Matejcek is harvesting sugarbeets near Wahpeton, North Dakota. Weve had up to five inches of rain in the last few weeks. Its muddy, but were getting sugarbeets harvested. There will be at least a week left on the sugarbeets, he says. The soybeans look good with yields in the 5. I think theres a pretty good bean crop here. Matejeck says in the corn looks decent and some farmers have been harvesting it wet. Harvest Hotline is sponsored, in part, by U. S. Custom Harvesters, Inc. Could Be Better. Stephen, Minnesota farmer Betsy Jensen says unfortunately sugarbeet tonnage isnt what they had hoped for, but sugar content is good. Our sugarbeet cart is worth its weight in gold. Its helping us move through harvest pretty quickly. Were getting it done, but we are disappointed in the yields. The plus side is sugar has been high. Jensen hopes to finish sugarbeet harvest early next week and will move on to soybeans and corn after that. We have plenty of soybeans left to harvest, and of course a little bit of corn. Crops have certainly dried down fast, which was a result of the lack of moisture. The corn matured very quickly. Beets and Beans. Warren, Minnesota farmer Nathan Potucek is harvesting sugarbeets. Potucek says their tonnage is below what was forecast by American Crystal Sugar Company. Now that were in heavier ground, its starting to pick up. The sugar is around 1. Potuceks early soybean results vary. Weve done a few soybeans. Theyre coming around 4. Thats on the heavier clay soils. The corn looks good, but it will be a while too wet. Harvest Hotline is sponsored, in part, by Minnesota Soybean Farmers and the Soybean Checkoff. Grow More Sugar. This week, we visit with Tyler Ring from Syngenta about cercospora and the Hilleshog seed line up. Hear the latest update from Syngenta. Happy With Soybeans. Hillsboro, North Dakota farmer Joel Thorsrud is pleased with his soybean harvest. The beans looked really good early in the growing season, but we werent sure what to expect with a dry August. Download Cheatin` Movie In Hd. My combine is showing a 4. Im quite happy with that. Thorsrud adds that the corn crop also looks good in his area. We hope to get it off sooner, rather than later and a frost wouldnt hurt anything now. Everything is mature, so its just a matter of drying down and getting good harvest weather. More White Mold. The prevalence of late season white mold is higher than normal across North Dakota and Minnesota. North Dakota State University Extension plant pathologist Sam Markell says thats a little unusual for soybeans. Soybeans arent usually susceptible. We had moisture at the right time and right temperature. Weve seen white mold in dry beans, but, the s. Markell says when soybeans get white mold, the yield impact will be less than what is typically seen in dry beans. If you get it early enough and the main stem is dying, there will be some problems. I think there will be some impact, but I dont think well know until were done with harvest. Dry Bean Scene. The Dry Bean Scene airs Fridays at 1. PM on the Red River Farm Network. In this weeks report, hear harvest updates from East Grand Forks farmer Chris Adams and Cavalier Bean Companys Curt Kirking. Due to rain delays, Huso Crop Consultings Mark Huso says the majority of pinto beans along Highway 2 have just come off. I havent heard many issues about number two beans and discoloration from the weather. Quality has been good, and yields have ranged from 1. When it comes to soybean harvest, Huso says the western edge of Nelson county have the advantage. A lot of farmers are half to two thirds done with soybeans. Yields have been mostly good, but there are some variances with varieties and soil type. Ive heard yields as high as 5. Huso says farmers have also been busy preparing for sunflower harvest, which should start this week. A Few Corn Diseases Showing Up. Overall, the corn in southeastern South Dakota looks fine. South Dakota State University Extension plant pathology field specialist Connie Strunk says pockets of rain helped the crop. There are some diseases showing up in corn. The crop could have ear rot this year. A lot of the same pathogen, if you happen to have stalk rot, could also cause some ear rots on the ears of corn. Take a look. Corn stalk rot could also be an issue. We havent heard a lot of reports about the stalk rots. Weve been out or have seen a few fields where were seeing it, but really want farmers to scout and for them to know whats happening. Harvest Delays in South Dakota. South Dakota State University Extension state climatologist Laura Edwards says freezing temps were seen in the Aberdeen, South Dakota area this past week. There was a positive note, it was not a hard freeze. Certainly, thats slowed or stopped things as well. It doesnt look like well see a really cold morning for a while. Looking about two weeks out, things look warmer than average. We may not see a good stretch of cold temps for awhile. Edwards says South Dakota harvest has been delayed due to the wet, cool weather. A Quality Potato Crop. The potato harvest is well underway in the northern Red River Valley. Midwest Consulting Agronomist Dave Svobodny says soil conditions have improved a lot over the past month, but the main problem now is getting in and out of fields. Because potato farmers leave the headlands without crop its quite wet underneath, but they can move once theyre in the field. The quality of both the reds and the whites is good, and were just starting russets as well. Size and shape is as good as weve seen for quite a while. I expected harvest will be nearly complete by early next week. Svobodny says the sugarbeet crop in the area isnt as large in some places, but sugar content is still good. Some farmers probably arent meeting the projected numbers that came out earlier, but its a nice crop.
